Service turned to romance for Emily and James, who met in Boston while working with an AmeriCorps program for at-risk high school students. As the only two participants to sign up for a second year, their work brought them closer together. When Emily moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to teach special education, James went with
her. Knowing how important family is to Emily, he told her parents that he planned to propose. Emily’s mother gave him an heirloom ring so that Emily could choose her own engagement ring a er she said yes. e couple planned a relaxed wedding with a garden tea-party theme, which took place in Emily’s parents’ backyard in Bentonville. Emily’s mother planned the wedding with help from coordinator Kim Mertes. “I can’t stress how grateful I am to my mom for all of this,” Emily said.
