Modified T-shirts show school spirit
Each fall, people don school colors to display their pride at football games, pep rallies and more. Modified T-shirts provide a crafty and fashionable way to show school spirit. Here are a few styles students and parents can make before game day, and best of all, no sewing is required.
1
For this cutout design, turn
a T-shirt inside-out; then use tailor’s chalk to draw the outline of a heart or mascot. Use a ruler to draw horizontal lines about 1 inch apart inside the design.
2 JERSEY ROAR
Place a piece of cardboard inside the shirt to protect
the back, and cut out the
slits with scissors or a hobby knife, making sure not to slice one’s fingers.
HEARTFELT HOMECOMING
Place a piece of cardboard inside the shirt to protect the back of the garment; then slice only the horizontal lines using scissors or a hobby knife.
For a sporty mesh look, turn the shirt inside-out and cut off the sleeves before the seams. Then use a ruler and chalk to mark 1-inch slits about 1⁄2 inch apart in rows about 1 inch apart.
Turn the shirt right-side out, and layer over another shirt in a complementary color to complete the look; then show some love for the home team.
Repeat the marking and cutting pattern on the back of the shirt. Layer the shirt over another shirt in a complementary color, and root for your favorite team.

For this weather-ready poncho, cut the bottom of an extra-large shirt right below the sleeves, and slice the side. Cut an 18-by-12- inch panel from another shirt, and cut a sleeve into 10 strips.
PRIDEFUL PONCHO
Fold the smaller panel in half longwise, and line with the open bottom of the larger panel. Poke five holes on each side where the panels meet, and tie together with the strips.
For this two-tone style, cut two complementary shirts down the middle and cut out the collars. Then mark 3-inch slits about an inch apart down the raw edge.
4 DOUBLE DUTCH
Use scissors to cut the slits, making sure both half-shirts have the same number of slits. Tie the fringes together, starting at the bottom of the back side.
Finish the look by cutting fringe about 3 inches deep and 1 inch apart at the bottom of the garment, and layer over an outfit. Stay warm, students!
