Celebrating women in the workforce
BUSINESS
TABLE OF CONTENTS
Since 1928, the Business and Profession- al Women’s Foundation has designated one week each year as National Business Women’s Week, a time to honor the contributions and achievements of working women.
Set for Oct. 17-22 this year, National Busi- ness Women’s Week provides an opportuni- ty to recognize and highlight the progress women have made as professionals, business owners and entrepreneurs.
The concept of National Business Wom- en’s Week originated with Emma Dot Par- tridge, executive secretary of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs from 1924 to 1927.
The first annual observance of National Busi- ness Women’s Week was held April 15-22, 1928, when National President Lena Madesin Phillips opened the week with a nationally broadcast speech. She stated that the purpose of the week was “to focus public attention upon a better busi- ness woman for a better business world.”
In 1938, National Business Women’s Week was moved to the third full week of October.

U.S. President Herbert Hoover was the first president to issue a letter recognizing National Business Women’s Week and the contributions and achievements of working women. From this early effort, this week of recognition has grown into a nationwide sa- lute to all working women.
In this section, readers will meet many of the local women who embody this en- trepreneurial, leadership spirit and help to strengthen the foundation of each other and their communities.
