Q A
with Dr. Don Steely, Conway Regional Cardiovascular Clinic
Q: What are some of the symptoms of heart attacks in women and men?
A: Heart-attack awareness is critical. We have to get people thinking about symptoms early because the sooner we see the patient, the better the outcome. While not all heart attacks have traditional symptoms, chest pain is the classic male symptom. However, shortness of breath is more common than chest pain after age 65. Women may also have chest pain but often have more subtle symptoms:
• Pain or discomfort in the chest, left arm or back;
• An unusually rapid heartbeat; • Shortness of breath;
• Nausea, dizziness or fatigue;
• Extreme weakness;
• Indigestion; or • Sweating.
(Editor’s Note: Dr. Don Steely with the Conway Regional Cardiovascular Clinic has more than 24 years of experience as a physician and holds a medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He also completed a residency in internal medicine and pediatrics and a fellowship in cardiology at UAMS. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiology and interventional cardiology. Steely has a particular interest in sports cardiology and serves as the team cardiologist for the University of Central Arkansas Athletic Program.)
THUMBS up 9 must-have apps for summer survival
BY CODY GRAVES SPECIAL SECTIONS WRITER
Warm weather is on the way, and with that comes vacations for many families. While people are out and about, there are many smartphone applications that can help them in many ways, from keeping them updated on weather to sending selfies to friends. The following is a list of smartphone applications that are essential for the summer.
Clips: This new video-editing app for iPhone devices lets you create unique video clips for posting to social media. Add filters, text and emojis; then share the clips
on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
WeatherWheel: This app provides a unique graphical interface that gives up-to-date weather information. The app offers a five-day forecast and even gives times for
sunrise, sunset and phases of the moon.
Venmo: This payment application allows users to send each other cash, quickly and easily. Whether it’s for a cool drink at a bar or concert tickets, friends can pay each
other back without heading to the ATM.
Eventseeker: This app allows users to keep track of their favorite musicians, comedians and sports teams. It gives alerts when an artist is performing nearby and
allows users to buy tickets directly from the app.
PackPoint: Never forget your toothbrush again. This app will help organize what you need to pack based on length of travel, weather at your destination and activities
planned. Packing lists are customizable, and you can share lists with fellow travelers so they’ll know what to pack, too.
OpenTable: Discover new restaurants, make reser- vations, and enjoy your dining experience. This app can help make finding a place to eat on vacation simple
with reviews and reservations. The app works in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom and more.
UVLens: There’s no faster way to make a trip miserable than to get a sunburn. UV Lens lets users see the UV index forecast for the day to help make plans. The app
also has information about different skin types and sunscreen reminders that indicate when sunscreen should be reapplied.
Netflix: Whether you’re on a long car ride or in a hotel room, Netflix has thousands of television shows and movies to keep you and your family entertained. Netflix’s
selection of children’s programming can also keep the little ones interested on those especially long trips.
SpotHero: Let’s face it; finding a parking space can be a pain, but SpotHero can give you more control over finding a parking spot in major cities. The application
gives access to more than 3,000 garages, lots and valets nationwide. Users can compare parking garages and rates, reserve a parking spot and get directions to their selected garage.
