Summer STAPLES Comfort seekers can relax in seasonal stitches
BY EMILY EDMISTEN SPECIAL SECTIONS WRITER
Finding the right outfit for most spring and summer occasions can be tricky, but these suggested outfits have you covered. From a
morning stroll to an evening spent in downtown, these summer staples can make any outing spe- cial. Mix and match simple additions to dress up or tone down outfits to make the style fit your personality, while also making a statement.
CAPRIS
Like chokers, capri pants are making a comeback. Capris are long enough to cover most of the legs while still helping women stay cool. Whether denim or linen, a pair of capris in a neutral color offers the abil- ity to mix and match outfits.
CHOKERS
Trends come around, then come back around. Popular in the ’90s, choker necklaces are back as a must-have accessory for spring and summer 2017,
said Deana Oie-Morin, owner of Jack and Diane’s Boutique in Perryville.
Chokers used to be simple, but now they come in all types of styles and varieties, such as velvet and leather, thick or thin. Some women see this trend geared toward youth, but chokers of the right ma- terial and size can be worn by most women.
KIMONOS
Light and airy, yet refined, the kimono is one of the most versatile garments a woman
A hot trend that has a hold on women this season is chokers. Made in a variety of styles, fabrics and colors, chokers are a must-have accessory.
a great way to spruce up any outfit,” Oie-Morin said. “Statement purses make any outfit stand out and double up as a great accessory.”
TUNIC DRESSES
Tunic dresses offer com- fort while allowing women to remain professional.
Tunics layered with fun capri leggings can provide women comfort while avoid- ing constricting or hot cloth- ing. These dresses are avail- able in cotton, linen or knit.
“A great summer idea for women looking to stay cool is to dress in sleeveless and lightweight tunics,” Oie-Mo- rin said. She added that shades of ivory, blush and gray are the most optimum
choices for beating the heat. Finding comfortable, fash- ionable clothing that can be worn to multiple occasions is easier than ever. Following these new trends can help keep women cool during the
upcoming summer days.
Let’s talk about coffee — specifically, cold-brew coffee. Now I love my coffee as much as the next girl; however, I’m not so crazy about that bitter undertaste. For years, I blamed it on “cheap” or “stale” coffee. I may have been ... well, I hate
to say wrong, because you really should buy the best-quality coffee you can afford, so let’s just say I wasn’t exactly correct. Evidently, the heat-brewing process can release oils and fatty acids from coffee grounds — and that results in a bitter flavor.
can own. Many women have parts of their bodies they’d like to improve, such as their arms. A kimono is light enough to wear in the scorching sun and prevent unwanted attention to problem areas.
“Kimonos are so versa- tile and can be worn with any outfit, casual or formal,” Oie-Morin said. “With the wide sleeves and a loose fit, they complement any body
type and make a perfect fashion statement.”
STATEMENT PURSES
Large statement purses are great for summer. While fun and colorful, oversized bags can also be convenient for women to take on a vacation. Large purses come in a variety of sizes, styles and fabrics such as leather, straw and more.
“Statement purses are

dilute it with water or cream if you’re serving it hot). Plus, cold-brew cof- fee is affordable — unless you buy one of those fancy cold-brew ma- chines — so you can feel vastly su- perior to those folks paying $3 to $5 per serving at high-end coffee shops.
Here’s how to make dark, rich, super-smooth cold-brew coffee in your kitchen.
1. Coarsely grind 1 cup of whole (unflavored) coffee beans. Use the coarsest setting on your grinder.
2. Place the ground coffee in a 1 1/2- to 2-quart container (I use an 8-cup mixing bowl with a spout), and pour 4 cups of water over the coffee. Many sources suggest using filtered water, but I use plain old rural-Lonoke County tap water, and the cold brew turns out great.
ARSHIA KHAN / RIVER VALLEY & OZARK EDITION Cold-brew coffee is perfect for serving over ice because the brew is so concentrated. Add a drizzle of cream and sweeten
hours and still get good results.
4. Line a fine strainer with a couple of layers of cheesecloth or muslin, and strain the coffee into a second container. You may want to repeat this two or three times to make sure you get all the grounds (unless you’re like my hubs, who prefers a 2-inch layer of coffee
grounds at the bottom of his cup). 5. To make iced coffee: Sweeten as desired (you’ll find that cold- brew coffee is naturally sweeter than regular coffee, so experiment a bit), pour over ice and add water
or cream to dilute to your taste.
If you prefer your coffee hot, you can heat the brew on the stovetop or in the microwave just until warm (whatever you do, don’t boil the cof- fee, or you’ll lose that cold-brew
3. Stir the mixture to make sure the coffee grounds are completely saturated; then cover the container, and let the

6. Store coffee in an airtight container in the refrigerator
for up to a week.
