For those who have a passion for helping others and a desire to make the world around them a better place, love science and are in- terested in learning about how the human body works, and want to see more doctors serving people in Arkansas, the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University could be the perfect place to pursue a career in medicine.
Located on the Jonesboro campus of Arkansas State University, NYITCOM at A-State is the state’s first osteopathic medical school and is committed to giving people in Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta better access to health care and health education. Arkansas is facing a significant shortage when it comes to doctors practicing in the state. Additionally, Arkansas ranks poorly among all states with its high number of diseases such as cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.
NYITCOM at A-State was established in 2016 as an additional location to NYITCOM in Long Island, New York. The mission of NYITCOM at A-State is to address both the physician shortage in this region and to help improve health outcomes among the
people living in Arkansas and the Delta through health-education programs in communities throughout the state and region.
Medical students at NYITCOM at A-State are trained for a lifetime of learning and prac- tice. The college is committed to preparing osteopathic doctors for careers in health care, including those in rural and underserved com- munities. NYITCOM at A-State students learn about how social factors — such as income and geography — impact people’s health, and the students study how health care policies shape the way medicine is practiced in our state and country. Being an excellent doctor is the ground-floor expectation at NYITCOM. We believe it is a privilege to be a physician, and with great privilege comes great respon- sibility. NYITCOM at A-State student doctors are taught to maintain competence and com- passion, as well as the ability to better serve the community and society through research, teaching and servant leadership.
