A fisherman casts from his boat at Lake Conway. The lake has large populations of bass, catfish, bream, crappie and bluegill.
Cadron flows through private property, so anglers need to be mindful of property rights and avoid trespassing. Any large- mouth bass shorter than 15 inches must be released immediately, according to the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission.
Kevin Connell, of Greenbrier, has fished on the North Fork of Cadron Creek quite a bit over the years. He said he and his family fish from kayaks and always manage to catch quite a few fish.
“We have caught several different spe- cies of sunfish on that stretch including long ear sunfish, bluegill, green sunfish and a lot of spotted bass,” Connell said. “We have occasionally caught catfish there too even though we weren’t really targeting them.”
He said during the summer months, the creek is tough to float because the water gets pretty low and you have to carry a kayak quite a distance.
“What stands out most to me is that it is such a pretty area where we have made a lot of great memories with our kids,” Connell said. “It is also close to home for us. I think it is an often overlooked gem of central Arkansas.”
catfish daily limit of five and is open to fishing with rod or pole only and there is handicapped-accessible fishing pier available.
“Our biggest draw fishing wise is catfish and bass, and we have some bream as well,” said park interpreter Sam Files. “We are currently overrun with small bass, so the Game and Fish [Commission] said any bass under 15 inches, can be kept.”
Files said Lake Bennett is more secluded than and not as busy as other lakes in the county. He also said the boat ramp is free and there is no fee to fish at the lake, other than a fishing license. He said there is also a snack bar that is open from noon to 6 p.m. daily and there are other things to do in the park as well.
“We have canoes, kayaks and paddle boats for rent, which is an amenity that a lot of other lakes don’t have,” Files said. “ is lake is great for beginners and kids alike. It is really small and there isn’t much of a current and it is very accessible for kayaking and fishing.”
Schroeder said electric trolling motors and human-powered motors are allowed. He said the main attraction of Lake Bennett is the beauty and peace and quiet.
“While there is a good density of largemouth bass in Lake Bennett, larger individuals are few and far between due to the lack of productivity and forage,” he said.
