SEAMSTRESSES SERVE AS GUIDES TO THE DRESS-FITTING PROCESS
With all the extravagance of wedding dresses, some might wonder how anyone could alter them. However, a skillful seamstress can make even the most ornate gown t like a glove.
“It’s a certain eye and a certain technique, so that’s why we recommend somebody that’s got wedding-dress experience,” said Lindy Lanford, owner of The Bridal Cottage in North Little Rock.
Almost every dress requires alterations, she added. Brides and bridesmaids can follow these tips to navigate the process of buying and being tted for a dress.
TRY ON SAMPLE GOWNS
The rst step is to visit various gown shops and try on the samples available. Most sample sizes will not be the size shoppers wear every day, so expect them to be ill- tting. Smaller dress shops special-order gowns whenever possible, Lanford said, but brides who are buying off the oor due to a tight budget or time frame should select a dress that requires minimal alterations.
ORDER THE RIGHT SIZE
Once the gown is chosen, bridal consultants take measurements and order the gown according to the designer’s sizing guide. Shops can order with alterations in mind by asking manufacturers to send the hem unattached or create a custom hem for brides 5-4 and shorter. In addition to hemming, many gowns require alterations at the sleeves, bust and waist, she said.
SCHEDULE THE FIRST FITTING
Most seamstresses prefer that brides contact them two months before the wedding, Lanford said, but brides should add time if they plan to display bridal portraits at the wedding, since the photos can take four to six weeks for completion. Alteration costs start at $300, she added.
TIP
“Remember that this is a fun time. You’re engaged. People are getting excited. Your family and friends are thrilled that they’re there during the process. Don’t make it so stressful. These decisions — they’re a lot of decisions to make, yes, but take them one at a time and really think about your day, and the most important part of your day is that you’re marrying the love of your life.”
