While complex in nature and even intimidating upon first glance, the bullet journal is a successful planning and orga- nizational tool because it can be tailored to an individual’s needs and desires. Bullet journals are used for everything from to-do lists and budgeting to tracking habits and potty training. It can be simple, with only text and a few small icons, or contain heavy artistic elements such as calligraphy.

Log tasks, events and notes using specific signifiers for each, such as bullets for tasks and hyphens for notes, or plan meals by drawing what will be eaten each day of the week. Figuring out what works best on a personal level is one of the best parts of bullet journaling.
Here are a few tips and examples to help you get started.
1. BUY THE RIGHT JOURNAL — a midsize notebook that’s small enough to take places but big enough to write everything that is needed. The journal should also be fairly durable, as it’s likely to have enough pages to fill multiple months. The pages can be blank, lined, graphed or dotted, although many bullet-journaling experts prefer a notebook with dotted pages.
2. LEAVE THE FIRST FEW PAGES BLANK so that once you’ve filled in more pages, you can go back and write in an index with major tasks, events, accom- plishments and their page numbers for future reference.
3. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT, and while it’s likely that your bullet journal won’t be picture perfect on the first few tries, you’ll eventually find a method that works for you. Don’t be afraid to explore your options and mess up a few times before you find the best way to fill in your bullet journal, and remember, there’s no right or wrong way to do it, so get comfortable with the technique, and have fun.
