McCrory head coach Chris Kennon, right, talks with members of his team during a practice earlier this season. This year, McCrory has moved from the 2A-6 Conference to the 2A-3 Conference.
McCRORY continued from 32SS
“We rotated two guys. ... Sam will proba- bly end up being our guy because of the sets we’ll use with [junior] Tarzan Alumbaugh (6-0, 240),” Kennon said. “He will be in the H-back-, fullback-type sets.”
Starters returning on offense are senior running back T.J. Alford (5-11, 165), Alumbaugh, junior tackle Travon Dewitt (6-3, 275), senior halfback Chance Davis (5-5, 160) and junior tight end Colby Lane (6-3, 195).
Alford returns at safety. Alumbaugh, Dewitt, Davis and Lane return at linebacker. Senior Hagan Blackmon (5-8, 180) returns on the defensive line.
“We have more team speed than we had last year, especially at the corners, safeties and linebackers,” Kennon said.
“I’ve been pretty pleased, and I was pretty pleased tonight,” the coach said Monday.
“Our biggest thing is that we’ve got to continue to work our offensive and defensive lines,” he said. “We’ve got one returning starter on the offensive line. That’s been our biggest battle. Once we get to a point where we can scheme and block a little bit, the kids will do what they are supposed to do.”
Kennon said the nonconference games with England, Des Arc and Clarendon will help get those linemen ready.
“Of course, you want to win all of those, but at the end of the day, they don’t change anything at the end of the year,” he said. “You’ve got three nonconference games to fig- ure stuff out. That is going to help us out a lot.”
Kennon said this is not the most talented group he’s ever coached, but he loves the way they work hard.
“The kids have been focused and worked hard,” he said. “They’ve heard that you’ll get by and compete, but don’t expect a lot. They’ve heard that so much that they’ve taken offense to that. They’ve worked really hard to get better.”
