Maxfield Park opening Phase 1 of grounds June 24
BY SPENCER GRIFFIN / SPECIAL SECTIONS WRITER
After much anticipation in the Batesville area, Maxfield Park is ready to unveil the first phase of its gorgeous grounds June 24.
During the Southern Food Festival, Maxfield Park will showcase its memorial garden, which includes a waterfall, a sculpture and a large slab of stone that dates back to the 1800s. The stone slab was originally in the Maxfield family, but Danny Dozier — project manager, vice president of Main Street Batesville and chairman of the Design Com- mittee — helped resurrect the piece and bring it to the park.
The other parts of the park that will be open to the public June 24 will be a handicap-accessible sidewalk coming into green space, as well as a completed stage.

Through in-kind services and donations, Danny Dozier estimates that Main Street Batesville has invested $150,000 to $200,000 into the Maxfield Park thus far, with an estimated overall price tag for the park of $350,000 to $400,000.
Dozier said a memorial stone will also be placed near the memorial garden, what he calls the heartbeat of the park. “Thatpartoftheparkwillalsoincludealargememorial stone that was quarried at McBride’s quarry and carved out with the memorial to the Strahl family,” he said. “Anne
was the owner of the property, and Anne was a Maxfield, so that’s where the Strahl connection comes in.”
Dozier went on to describe the background of the Maxfield family and how the park came about.
“Anne Strahl was my neighbor, and we visited quite a bit.
