WILLIAM HARVEY/ RIVER VALLEY & OZARK EDITION Perry County resident Jessica Mashburn stands in the plaza at the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton. Mashburn said she incorporates every learning style into her teaching. “You’re really not prepared for teaching until you have taught,” she said. Mashburn also enjoys gardening and

the Dardanelle Middle School principal.
“I wasn’t looking for a job,” she said. “My pastor
actually sent me a text message.”
Keeling, also the pastor of Ola Free Will Baptist
Church, said Mashburn has “a great personality” and is a team player.
“I like to hire folks that I think will blend well with the team and sacrifice time and other things for the betterment of the team, and she exemplifies all of those different categories we’re looking for,” Keeling said. “She has a great track record of good teaching. We’re excited about having her.”
Mashburn has started working toward a second master’s degree, this one in special education through Arkansas Tech. She will finish the degree at the end of 2017 or early 2018, she said.
Not only is there a shortage of special-education teachers statewide, Mashburn said, but she also has a special place in her heart for children who have problems learning.
“I hate to see people struggling; I hate it,” she said.
Mashburn said her close-knit family and their support have made a difference in her life. Her mother was a trial- court assistant, as well as an emergency-medical technician at one point in her life. Mashburn’s fa- ther works for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in the oil and gas field. The family still has a farm at the base of Petit Jean Mountain, just down the road from where Mashburn and her husband live.
Her dad had the idea to plant pecan trees, so that’s what they did on part of the 120-acre farm.
“It’s been a great family activity; I know that sounds nerdy,” she said, laughing. The farm is home to chicken, pigs and cattle, too.
As if she weren’t busy enough, Mashburn and her husband, along with her parents and sister, Shelby McGehee, became certified in scuba diving. Mash- burn went above and beyond and graduated three weeks ago as a dive master.
“My family, we’re always traveling, always try- ing to meet new people. We live life to the fullest,” she said. And she still keeps her nursing-assistant skills sharp by helping out occasionally at CHI St. Vincent Morrilton.
It’s teaching that’s on her mind now, though.
“My favorite thing about teaching is watching kids get excited,” she said. Mashburn said she be- lieves in using art and every tool she has to help motivate them. She was named art student of the year in high school.
“I love to paint. So many pieces of art are con- nected to literature,” she said. If she teaches Romeo and Juliet, she will go to the internet and pull up a sculpture of the pair to show her students “and pull in history.”
She loves Shakespeare and the British classics, such as Pride and Prejudice, as well as Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. “The first time I read that book, I fell in love with it,” she said.
Students should read, and they should be able to write, she said.
“This is the problem,” Mashburn said, holding up her cellphone. “I’m all about technology, but they’ve actually got to write with a pen and paper.”
She has stayed busy this summer. “A lot of people think we [teachers] take a three-month break, and that’s not true. I did a vocabulary professional devel- opment, and it was fabulous,” she said.
Mashburn said she has decided to get a doctorate in curriculum and instruction online through the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, “because I love the idea of just building curriculum for somebody,” she said. “That’s the amazing thing about the career of education. There are so many opportunities in there — so many — you can play with it.”
Despite her itch to get more education and try one more thing, Mashburn said she spent much of the summer getting her room ready at Dardanelle Middle School, and she loves her co-workers.
“They’re just beautiful people to work with,” she said. “There’s an overall positive energy.”
Despite the opportunities she’ll no doubt have to advance in her career, she is content to be in the Dardanelle School District.
“It would be hard to let go of my angel babies,” she said. “I totally plan on being there the next 30 years.”
