DIVE IN!
For those hot, summer days in Arkansas, there’s nothing like a dip in the pool.
Morrilton City Pool has been updated, too. Last year, the city added a large slide, which has been a popular attraction. This spring, the pool was resurfaced due to some cracking in the lining. Ross said the new surface makes the pool like new again.
TAKE A SWING
Morrilton’s city tennis and basketball courts were also resurfaced this year. Ross said that the courts’ lines were fading, and the surface was cracking in some places. The tennis court upgrades were especially needed, she said, because the courts are used by the Morrilton High School tennis team. She said that before the upgrades, the team only played away games because of the condition of the courts. Now, the team can host its opponents on the Mor- rilton courts.
BUILDING COMMUNITY
In May, the Morrilton Parks and Rec- reation Department purchased the Con- way County Community Center. The facility has a gym, an indoor pool, an aerobics room, a conference room and racquetball courts. The building was purchased by the city for about $270,000, Mayor Allen Lipsmeyer said. To date, the exterior has been painted maroon and gray to match the colors of the Morril- ton Devil Dogs. Ross said that the parks department is hoping to start a remodel of the facility within the next few months. The renovation will eliminate the racquet- ball courts, which will be converted into bleacher areas for the youth sports pro- grams. Ross said the renovation should be a three- to six-month process.
Ross said the purchase of the facility will have numerous benefits to the community. Owning the community center will allow the department to host youth programs that were previously hosted at the high school. The department will also be able to add programs like men’s basketball and more youth leagues. Swimming les- sons can be held year-round, as well as pool parties. Ross said the community center would also host a youth advisory council, a volunteer program for students who want to help in the community. She said the council is a good opportunity for students that looks great on college applications.
