MAD FOR MARSALA
PANTONE’S COLOR OF THE YEAR IDEAL FOR BOTH NATURAL, SOPHISTICATED DECOR
STORY BY LINDA GARNER-BUNCH, SPECIAL SECTIONS WRITER
Inspired by the lush flavor and hue of Italy’s famous fortified wine, the experts at the Pantone Color Institute have chosen Marsala as the 2015 color of
the year — and the intoxicating shade is popping up everywhere, from fashion runways to cosmetics and even interior design.
Marsala’s earthy blend of brown and wine red provides a unifying element for home decor, whether used as an accent color or as a focal hue. According to the color experts at Pantone, the shade’s plush characteristics are enhanced when the color is applied to textured surfaces, such as rugs or upholstery. Marsala is ideal for the kitchen and dining room, as well as other areas of the home, such as the family room, bedrooms and bathrooms.
“Marsala is a very warm and soothing color,” said Ray Kordsmeier, owner of Kordsmeier Furniture and Appliance in Conway.
Consider painting the dining room a delicious
shade of Marsala, or tossing a Marsala-hued rug over a hardwood floor in the family room for added warmth. Even a hint of this rich, reddish-brown hue — perhaps in a painting or in patterned textiles — creates a tasteful effect for any room.
“Marsala pairs with jewel tones, blushes, camels and navy blues,” Kordsmeier said. “It also decorates extremely well with neutral colors, such as taupe or gray.”
Other delicious pairings include teaming Marsala with vibrant yellow, refreshing aqua or even soft lavender or bright coral. Shades of Marsala range from clear midtones to deep, rich hues, giving the color almost limitless possibilities.
No matter what your personal decorating style — naturally rustic, cheerfully bright or subtly elegant — Marsala can bring just the right touch to your home. A matte finish will enhance the color’s earthy, organic nature, while a glossy sheen adds a bit of luxury and glamour.

Marsala tones in the artwork and accent cushions complete the setting. Above, from left: Marsala may be paired with a wide range of colors, including apricot and mustard yellow. Add a splash of Marsala with wine-toned vases or other accents.
