Jimmy Clark was born in Little Rock and grew up in Tennessee, but his family vacationed in Heber Springs, and he moved to the community 30 years ago. Clark retired after a career in construction, but he was asked to take over as director of the Heber Springs Parks and Recreation Department, a position he held for 3 1/2 years. Clark said he was motivated to run for mayor of Heber Springs because of his desire to see the community continue to grow and improve.

New Heber Springs mayor says business background a plus
By Tammy Keith
SPECIAL SECTIONS WRITER
immy Clark, the new mayor of Heber Springs, is happy for people to know that he is not a politician, but that he ran because he
has “the right heart” for Heber Springs, as sappy as it sounds, he said.
However, he’s just as happy not to have it mentioned that he was the quarterback on the University of Central Arkansas team that won a conference championship in 1976 and played for the national championship.
It was too long ago, the 61-year-old said, and it doesn’t matter now.
His coach at UCA, Ken Stephens of Conway, disagreed.
“That’s the kind of guy he is,” Stephens said. “Jimmy was one of those kind of guys
that everybody liked; all the players liked him. He was quarterback, and he was a good quarterback. He was smart; he was a good leader, and we probably wouldn’t have [won the conference championship] without him. He took control on the field. He’s an A-1 person — you couldn’t ask anymore of him than what he gave.”
Stephens didn’t know Clark was elected mayor, but he wasn’t surprised.
“He’s the kind of guy that can handle it; that’s for sure,” Stephens said. “He ought to make them a good mayor; he’s an outstanding person.”
