A great way to build your professional network is to reconnect with your college or university. Alumni organizations and local chapters can introduce you to people who earned your degree at your school, and many people love to help out their fellow alumni.
For a health care career in which you have a chance to develop lasting relation- ships with patients and colleagues, consider working in long-term care.
In hospitals, a patient’s stay is not as long as it is in a nursing home/rehabilitation cen- ter, where patients stay for many months and, in most cases, years.
Caregivers have the opportunity to de- velop special bonds with their patients and their families. Many times, these relation- ships lead to conversations and storytelling by the patients. Thus, caregivers find out a lot about their patients’ lives, including their careers. Plus, the patients have learned many life lessons that they pass along to the caregivers. Many times, patients’ stories are humorous, bringing about smiles and laughter. This makes the caregivers’ and the patients’ days much brighter.
Another benefit from working in long- term care is that caregivers are a lot alike, meaning that you will be working with caring people like yourself. Many times, caregivers consider their colleagues their extended family.
If you are seeking a career where rela- tionships with your patients, their families and your colleagues are important to you, long-term care is a great option. The list be- low includes some central-Arkansas centers that have current job openings. Whether you want a direct-care position, such as being a registered nurse, a licensed prac- tical nurse or a certified nurse assistant, or you want to be part of the support staff in a housekeeping, dietary or activities position, the perfect place for you could be at one of these centers. For more information, call each care center directly.
ice has already been broken in a sense, as the school is essentially a built-in connection. You also won’t have to worry about the awkwardness that might come when meeting a professional contact with whom you have less in common. Alumni organizations and local chapters can introduce you to people who earned your degree at your school, and many people love to help out their fellow alumni.
• Employ social media. Social media is not just for kids. In fact, social media is a great way for professionals to make and maintain professional contacts. Professional networking websites can
make it easy to connect with fellow professionals who are looking to do the same. Twitter can be used to promote professional events such as seminars or workshops you are working with. These platforms can be used to grow your network quickly and easily, but be sure to vet each person you connect with to make sure you are affiliating yourself with the right people.
Building a strong professional network takes patience and hard work, but the right network can pay dividends for years to come.
