Q: How long have you been a nurse? A: 11 years
Q: What made you want to become a nurse? A: I wanted to make a difference, to do something that would challenge me and make me a better person.
Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to get into the profession?
A: Talk to us! Most of us, even grumpy old ER nurses, love helping people get started in nursing.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job? A: I enjoy the teaching. Sometimes I teach my
patients things to help them with their health; sometimes I teach new nurses how to do things they have never done.
Q: What is your work schedule?
A: I work three to four 12-hour shifts a week, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Q: Who in your field inspires you?
A: Several people come to mind when I think of people I look up to in the medical field: Linda McIntosh, Darrell King and my dad, the dinosaur paramedic (25 years and counting).
Q: What education/training did you need for your job?
A: To start, only a nursing license and a Basic Life Support card. Most of the specialized training starts once you begin working: Advanced Cardiac Life Support/Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Trauma Nurse Core Course certification, National Institute of Health Stroke Scale and Certified Emergency Nurse specialization. The longer you work, the more acronyms you get.
Q: What are your career goals?
A: To keep helping people and doing fun things as long as I can.
