Literacy Council, said tutors are still avail- able, as much of the work is one on one, so it wasn’t affected by the current pandemic. She said right now, the council is focused on its summer reading program for kids. She said the council always needs volunteers and tutors to be on standby for when the council has students.
e Literacy Council of White County, at 811 S. Main St. in Searcy, assists adults in improving their literacy skills. e orga- nization also offers tutoring in English as a second language, GED preparation and driver’s-license-test prep. All of the council’s services are free.
e Literacy Council provides all the training materials needed, and volunteers are not required to have previous teaching experience. Evans said anyone who can read and hear can be trained to be a tutor. She said the program is very user-friendly and can be done online, if needed.
Volunteers can also assist in the coun- cil’s bookstore by sorting donations, shelving books and answering questions. Occasionally, volunteers assist with special events, such as fundraisers and promotional campaigns. How- ever, because of the current pandemic, there are not any special events at this time. Volun- teer applications are available on the website, whitecountyliteracy.org, and at the office.

UNITY HEALTH
Unity Health of Searcy, at 3214 E. Race Ave., offers volunteer positions with its aux- iliary, which provides nonclinical services to patients, guests and family members and as- sists hospital associates with certain tasks.
According to the auxiliary’s website, aux- iliary volunteers help with admissions, the cafeteria, chaplain services, gift shops and by going to waiting rooms and offering pa- tients magazines or by monitoring the com- fort of the waiting rooms.
