licensed doctors who can practice in all areas of medicine and surgery. NYITCOM at A-State will graduate its first class of doctors in May.
Being on the Arkansas State University campus, NYITCOM at A-State students have “dual citizenship” and can access all A-State facilities and attend A-State sporting events — Wolves Up! The students can live on cam- pus in housing that’s dedicated for medical students, and they can purchase meal plans in the cafeteria and food court. As part of NY- ITCOM’s commitment to health education, the college requires its students to perform com- munity service. Student doctors often speak at elementary schools about the importance of vaccines, why people need to regularly wash their hands and other relevant health
For those who have a passion for helping others and a desire to make the world around them a better place, love science and are interested in learning about how the human body works, and want to see more doctors serving people in Arkansas, New York Insti- tute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine-Arkansas could be the perfect place to pursue a career in medicine.
Located on the Jonesboro campus of Ar- kansas State University, NYITCOM at A-State is the state’s first osteopathic medical school and is committed to giving people in Arkan- sas and the Mississippi Delta better access to health care and health education. Arkan- sas is facing a significant shortage when it comes to doctors practicing in the state. Ad- ditionally, Arkansas ranks poorly among all states with its high number of diseases such as cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.
NYITCOM at A-State was established in 2016 as an additional location to NYITCOM in Long Island, New York. The mission of NYITCOM at A-State is to address both the physician shortage in this region and to help improve health outcomes among the peo-
ple living in Arkansas and the Delta through health-education programs in communities throughout the state and region.
Medical students at NYITCOM at A-State are trained for a lifetime of learning and prac- tice. The college is committed to preparing osteopathic doctors for careers in health care, including those in the inner city and rural communities. NYITCOM at A-State students learn about how social factors — such as income and geography — impact people’s health, and the students study how health care policies shape the way medicine is practiced in our state and country. Being an excellent doctor is the ground-floor ex- pectation at NYITCOM. We believe it is a privilege to be a physician, and with great privilege comes great responsibility. NYIT- COM at A-State student doctors are taught to maintain competence and compassion, as well as the ability to better serve the commu- nity and society through research, teaching and servant leadership.
