Ashcraft’s final season on the CHS sideline started with a 19-17 loss at Springdale, but the Wampus Cats reeled off three straight wins (49-18 over Jonesboro, 35-16 over Bentonville and 54-47 in overtime over Fort Smith Southside to open 7A-Central play) before falling to NLR for the first time, 24-14.
From there, the Wampus Cats won four straight —49-14 over Cabot, 49-29 over Fort Smith Northside, 45-3 over Little Rock Central and 31-0 over Little Rock Catholic — before dropping the regular-season finale to Bryant, 42-31.
5-2, Conway knocked off Rogers, sixth from the West, 41-14, in the opening round of the playoffs and Bentonville West, second from the West, in the quarterfinals, 48-40, before falling to the Charging Wildcats in the semis, 49-14. North Little Rock went on to beat Bentonville in the championship game, 44-37, at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.
“They had a great senior class and great senior leadership,” Fimple said of the 2017 Wampus Cats. “We’ve talked about the great senior class they had last year. Losing to Springdale the first game shows you the leadership those guys had to just buckle down and take it to the next level.
