COUNSELOR AT BEEBE HIGH SCHOOL
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN BEEBE?
About 47 years, basically all my life, except for the few years I was in college and when I lived in Floyd, which is also in White County.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LIVING IN BEEBE?
It’s home. I like the people and the sense of community. I like that it’s small enough that we are a community but large enough to have places to shop, eat, play and worship.
WHAT ARE SOME OF BEEBE’S BEST ATTRIBUTES?
Our school system is one of the very best attributes of Beebe. We draw families here to live in Beebe because of our school. It has the best of being a small school but also having the offerings and activities of larger schools. As Lee Bates, one of our high school graduates, said in his graduation speech several years ago, we’re just like Cheers, where everybody knows your name. Another attribute is our city library, the Goff Public Library. It’s in downtown Beebe and has a fantastic, hardworking, caring staff that promotes reading and books, in addition to programming such as knitting nights, children’s activities and community interest groups.
WHY IS EDUCATION AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE BEEBE COMMUNITY?
I am such a firm believer in education and that it is key for many of our students to be able to take charge of their lives. We know the education level attained by our students will often determine whether their children live in poverty. For our citizens to continue to grow in understanding the world, our community and each other, it is important that education be of quality and accessible to everyone. I also believe education is vital to helping our students and citizens develop problem-solving, communication and healthy-living skills that will equip them to be successful and fulfilled. An educated electorate is crucial, whether one lives in a small community like ours or in the largest cities of our country.
