TABLE OF CONTENTS
Since 1928, the Business and Profession- al Women’s Foundation has designated one week each year as National Business Women’s Week, a time to honor the contributions and achievements of working women.
Held Oct. 19-24, National Business Wom- en’s Week provides an opportunity to recog- nize and highlight the progress women have made as professionals, business owners and entrepreneurs.
The concept of National Business Women’s Week originated with Emma Dot Partridge, executive secretary of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs from 1924 to 1927.
The first annual observance of National Business Women’s Week was held April 15-22, 1928, when National President Lena Madesin Phillips opened the week with a nationally broadcast speech. She stated that the purpose of the week was “to focus public attention upon a better business woman for a better business world.”

was moved to the third full week of October. U.S. President Herbert Hoover was the first president to issue a letter recognizing National Business Women’s Week and the contribu- tions and achievements of working women. From this early effort, this week of recogni- tion has grown into a nationwide salute to all working women.
In this section, you will meet many of the local women who embody this entrepreneur- ial and leadership spirit and help to strengthen the foundation of each of their communities.
