bigger teams, we struggled,” Chumley said. “But when we played the smaller teams, we did really well.
“If we can match up with you sizewise, we can play with you and beat you. But these big ol’ post players, we haven’t figured out how to play them just yet.”
Chumley has been at Benton since 2007, and his daughter, Braxton, signed with the University of Arkansas at Monticello to play basketball last year. His wife, Brandy, is the volleyball coach at Benton.
The Lady Panthers will open the season Nov. 8 at home against eStem. Chumley said its team is usually pretty good.
“I think this is one of the tougher sched- ules we have ever had,” Chumley said. “We beefed it up.”
With the new alignment of conferences, combining 6A and 5A, the coach said the games of the year for the Lady Panthers will be the two against Watson Chapel.
“They are defending 5A champs,” Chumley said. “We are looking to knock them because they got most of them back, and they won
the title last year.
“They are certainly the favorite in our
conference.”
Benton’s new conference also includes
Little Rock Mills, Little Rock McClellan, White Hall, Sheridan and Pine Bluff.
“Chapel is definitely the favorite,” he said. “I hope we can play with them.”
Benton will play cross-town rival Bryant on Dec. 13, Little Rock Parkview and Pulaski Academy. “Beebe is also coming, and that’s going to be a big game,” Chumley said.
“We’ve got a pretty tough schedule. We will also play in the Greenbrier tournament, which Russellville also plays in.”
Chumley said Pine Bluff, which has a new coach after Loy Moore retired last season, is always athletic.
“These are teams that can just roll you up if you aren’t ready,” Chumley said.
