CONWAY SCHOOL DISTRICT
The upcoming school year will also reveal
updates in the Conway School District, where two schools are undergoing changes.
Ida Burns Elementary School on Donaghey Av- enue in Conway is completing the finishing touch- es of an $8 million construction and renovation project to replace a building that opened in 1956.
The two-story building, which will face Poplar Street, will include office space, 12 state-of-the-art classrooms, a cafeteria with a stage, a student health room for the school nurse, and a physical-educa- tion room that will double as a safe room. The ex- panded, renovated school is scheduled to open in August. Two classroom wings — one built in 1976 and the other in 1992 — that were perpendicular to the building that was torn down received new flooring, paint and bathrooms.
Another change involves a new name for one of the district’s schools. The Conway School District’s Board of Education voted unanimously to rename Bob Courtway Middle School to Bob and Betty Cour tway Middle School. The school, which was built in 1997, was named for Betty Courtway’s late husband. Bob Courtway was a longtime Hendrix swim coach, a volunteer swim coach at Conway High School and a school board member in the district.
Betty Courtway, who died in February at age 86, taught kindergarten for more than 25 years in Conway. She retired in 1993.The Courtways had five children, a daughter and four sons, including UCA President Tom Courtway.
