Get the scoop on one of summer’s favorite accessories
BY SARAH DECLERK SPECIAL SECTIONS WRITER
The summer sun is on its way, and many women may find themselves in need of a new pair of shades. Sunglasses are a fashionable and practical accessory, but with so many options available, finding the right pair can be tricky. Here are some things women should look for when picking out a pair of sunglasses.
Try them on
When shopping for sunglasses, it is imperative to try them before you buy them. This is the best way for women to determine how the sunglasses look and feel on their faces. When trying on sunglasses, make sure they feel comfortable around your nose, temples and ears. It is also important to glance at a mirror to make sure the sunglasses complement your features.
Fit your face
Every woman’s face is different, so each woman will look best in a different shape of sunglasses. Women with wide faces may look best in wide-set lenses that will not appear too small on them. Likewise, women with narrow faces might find that close-set lenses are not overpowering.
Lens shape also relates to face shape. Round-faced wom- en may look great with round lenses, but a woman with a long oval face may have a difficult time pulling off the ’60s-inspired look. Experiment with different shapes to find the lenses that best suit you.
Protect your peepers
With the many fun and fashionable possibilities offered by sunglasses, it is easy to forget their true purpose. Ac- cording to the American Optometric Association’s website, eyes that are exposed to too much UV radiation, even over a short period of time, can develop photokeratitis,
There are many kinds of sunglasses available, and women can select their ideal shades by trying them on, matching their face shape, noticing durability and UV protection, and experimenting with fun styles.
a painful “sunburn of the eye.” Solar radiation can also lead to cataracts and macular degeneration later in life, the website states.
Women should look at the tag of the sunglasses they plan to purchase to ensure that the pair offers adequate UV protection.
Quality counts
For sunglasses that will last all summer long, quality is key. Before you leave the store, make sure shades are sturdy. It is important to make sure the hinges do not wobble up and down and that the lenses are firmly in place. Once you buy a pair of sunglasses, make sure to keep them protected and in good condition.
Add interest
There are plenty of ways to make your sunglasses fun and unique. Today’s sunglasses are available in a variety of shades besides gray. Pink, purple, green, blue and orange sunglasses all add a stylish splash of color, and women can match or contrast their shades to their outfits for a fashion-forward look.
Sunglasses can also stand out if they have creative frames. Many frames feature jewels, stones or jazzy patterns such as zebra print. With so many styles available, there is sure to be a frame that fits your unique look.
