styling tips:
8 ways to jazz up your
SHOELACES

Whether you’re training for a big race, heading to the gym for a daily workout or just throwing on a pair of sneakers for a trip to the grocery store, you can easily create a unique look for your athletic shoes or lace-up boots.
Standard athletic shoes have six sets of eyelets, with a seventh set at the top that is offset from the rest, which may be used to prevent heel slippage. The lacing styles described below use only the first six sets of eyelets, with the first set being closest to the toes.
STRAIGHT BAR
1 This lacing style eliminates the underlying diagonals for a neater look that also relieves
pressure on the top ridge of the foot.
1. Center and thread the shoelace down through the first set of eyelets.
2. Thread the left side of the shoelace straight up and out through the second eyelet, then straight across and down through the opposite eyelet.
3. Thread the right side of the shoelace straight up and out through the third eyelet, then straight across and down through the opposite eyelet.
4. Repeat, alternating laces and skipping an eyelet, ending with both laces threaded up through the sixth set of eyelets.
3 LOOP BACK
This decorative lacing technique is easy to do — but take care not to shift the
loops off-center. Use laces that contrast with the shoe color to emphasize the loops.
1. Center and thread the shoelace up through first set of eyelets.
2. Pull each side of the lace toward the center; make a half twist, loop the laces around each other and thread each lace up through the second eyelet. Repeat until both lace ends are threaded up through the sixth eyelets.
5 LADDER
This distinctive lacing is generally used for military
boots, but it’s also great for creating an eye-catching look for casual footwear.
1. Center and thread the shoelace up through the first set of eyelets.
2. Thread each lace straight up and down through the second eyelet, then straight across, crisscrossing each other. Instead of threading the ends through the eyelet, pull the ends of the lace through the straight up-and-down loops, then straight up and down through the third eyelet.
3. Repeat to build a “ladder” up the shoe, ending with the laces threaded down through the sixth set of eyelets.
7 RIDING BOW
Generally used for riding boots, this method offers an
unusual look for those who dare to be different.
1. Center and thread the shoelace on a long diagonal with one end threaded up through the bottom left eyelet and the other threaded up through the top right eyelet.
2. Using the bottom lace only, thread across diagonally and up through the second eyelet, then straight across and down through the third eyelet. Repeat to create a zigzag pattern, ending with the lace threaded up through the fourth eyelet.
3. Repeat with the upper lace, zigzagging downward and ending with the lace threaded up through the fourth eyelet.

SKIPPING CRISSCROSS
This lacing method lengthens the lace ends because the
crisscross pattern skips eyelets. It’s perfect for those who prefer a minimalist, yet traditional, look.
1. Center and thread the shoelace down through the first set of eyelets.
2. Thread the left lace straight up and out through the second eyelet, then across diagonally and down through the third eyelet; repeat with the right lace.
3. Repeat with both laces, ending with lace ends threaded down through the sixth set of eyelets.
4 LATTICE
This popular lacing method results in a decorative lattice
effect. The look is easiest to achieve if you first thread the left lace, then weave the right lace in and out.
1. Center and thread the shoelace up through the first set of eyelets.
2. Thread the left lace diagonally and down through the fourth eyelet, then straight
up and out through the fifth eyelet; thread lace diagonally down through the second eyelet; repeat until lace is threaded up through the sixth eyelet.
3. Repeat with the right lace, weaving lace over and under the left lace.
6
TRIPLE X
This variation on the basic shoe- lacing method creates an open
look that still provides necessary support — and it can make almost any shoe more comfortable for wearers who have wide feet.
1. Center and thread the shoelace down through the first set of eyelets.
2. Thread the left side of the lace diagonally across and up through the second eyelet; repeat with the right side to create an X.
3. Thread the left lace across diagonally and up through the fourth eyelet (skipping the third one); repeat with the right side.
4. Thread the left lace across diagonally and up through the sixth eyelet (skipping the fifth one); repeat with the right side.
8 SAWTOOTH
Sometimes used to modify the fit of a shoe, this method pulls the underlying diagonals of the
shoelace at a steep angle, shifting the alignment of the sides of the shoe.
1. Center and thread the shoelace down through the first set of eyelets.
2. Thread the left side of the shoelace straight up and out through the second eyelet, then straight across and down through the opposite eyelet.
3. Thread the right side of the shoelace diagonally across and up through the third eyelet, then straight across and down.
4. Thread the left side of the shoelace diagonally across and up through the fourth eyelet, then straight across and down.
5. Repeat, alternating sides, ending with both laces threaded up through the sixth set of eyelets.
