MORRILTON DEVIL DOGS
Pitching depth a struggle for Devil Dogs this season
BY SAM PIERCE
STAFF WRITER
During his eight seasons at Morrilton High School, head baseball coach Todd Sparks said the biggest weakness has always been the team’s pitching.
“We have always struggled here pitchingwise,” Sparks said. “We have always had one or two good [pitchers], but when it comes to playing double headers, where you need more than one or two, we fall short.”
It doesn’t look any better this season for the Devil Dogs as they return just six players from last year’s 13-11 team. Of those six, only four started.
“We are going to be extremely young on the infield defensively,” Sparks said. “We have guys who didn’t get a lot of playing time, and some freshmen may play as well.
Conference: 5A West
Coach: Todd Sparks
Assistant coaches: Eric Robinson and
Caleb Powers
2016 record: 13-11
Mascot: Devil Dogs
Returning starters: Tanner Albillar,
Brady Russell, Jaylan Hawkins and Caleb Canady
“It doesn’t get much younger than that.”
Senior pitcher Tanner Albillar, who finished last season with a 5-4 record and a 3.50 ERA, will try to pick up the slack, the coach said.
“He is also probably our best hitter, too,”

Junior Shelby Reynolds returns after leading the team with 22 runs batted in last season.
Edwards said the team also has seven freshmen coming in, but he hasn’t had a chance to see them yet.
“We have a lot of potential there,” Edwards said. “I just don’t know what I will have yet.” Of the 13 girls on the team, all but one
plays basketball.
“We had a couple of early practices, and
we looked ready to play right there,” he said. “They looked crisp and ready to compete with just about anybody.”
The first game for Wonderview was scheduled for March 13 at Quitman.
“Sometimes the kids put a lot of pressure on themselves to be perfect,” Edwards said,
