YOUR NEIGHBOR
Daniel Davis
of Heber Springs
BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN WITH GREERS FERRY NATIONAL FISH HATCHERY
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN HEBER SPRINGS?
I was born and raised here.
WHAT MAKES HEBER SPRINGS
A GOOD PLACE TO CALL HOME?
Heber Springs is a small, tight-knit community, welcoming anyone who wishes to visit or make their home here. Heber Springs not only offers outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities, but also the qui- et friendliness of a small rural town. Heber Springs, however, is also close enough to larger towns and cities for residents to take advantage of additional services that might not be locally accessible.
WHAT DO YOU DO AT THE HATCHERY?
As a biological science technician, my job is to as- sist the biologists with the care and raising of brook and rainbow trout from the egg stage until they are released, approximately 20 months. This includes, but is not limited to, feeding, maintaining accurate counts, moving or separating fish to avoid overcrowd- ing, cleaning raceways, recognizing fish health issues and assisting with treatments. The Greers Ferry National Fish Hatchery has a staff of six, so we are all also involved with the daily maintenance and operation of the facility.
WHY IS THE HATCHERY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY?
The hatchery is important to the community for several reasons. We stock trout into the Little Red River below Greers Ferry Dam to enhance fishing opportunities. The hatchery also provides econom- ic growth to the community through increased sales of recreational gear, use of local hotels and restaurants, increased job opportunities to support growing tourism, partnerships with local schools and increased awareness of the importance of con- servation in our environment.
