Annual event recognizes nurses’ roles in health care
Each year, National Nurses Week begins May 6 and ends May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. During National Nurses Week and throughout the year, the American Nurses Association celebrates the role nurses play in delivering the highest level of care to their
patients. The nursing profession has been supported and promoted by the association since 1896. The ANA supports and encourages National Nurses Week recognition programs through state and district nurses associations, other specialty nursing organizations, educational facilities and independent health care companies and institutions.
The theme for this year’s National Nurses Week is “Year of the Healthy Nurse.” The ANA defines a healthy nurse as someone who actively focuses on creating and maintaining a balance and synergy of physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, personal and professional well-being. The ANA aims to improve the health of the nation’s 3.6 million registered nurses and, in turn, improve the health of the United States.
