DENTAL HYGIENISTS
Dental hygienists clean teeth, ex- amine patients for signs of oral dis- ease, such as gingivitis, and provide other preventative dental care. They also educate patients on ways to im- prove and maintain good oral health. Dental hygienists typically do the following: remove tartar, stains and plaque from teeth; apply sealants and fluorides to help protect teeth; and
take and develop dental X-rays. They also help patients understand the rela- tionship between diet and oral health. They may give advice to patients on how to select toothbrushes and other oral-care devices.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Dental hygienists typically need an associate degree in dental hygiene. Bachelor’s degrees in dental hygiene are also available but less common. A bachelor’s or master’s degree is usual- ly required for research, teaching or clinical practice in public or school health programs. Dental-hygiene pro- grams are commonly found in com- munity colleges, technical schools and universities. Programs typically take three years to complete and of- fer laboratory, clinical and classroom instruction.
