on call Q:
I’m trying to quit smoking.
Is smokeless tobacco a safe alternative to cigarettes?
It is not. Smokeless tobacco may be
less damaging to the lungs, but it is still dangerous and not an effective way to stop smoking.
Smokeless tobacco comes in two main types — chewing tobacco and snuff. Both types are usually placed in the mouth be- tween the gums and cheek or lips, where it remains for some time. Dry snuff can also be inhaled through the nose.
Like cigarettes, smokeless tobacco con- tains nicotine, which is highly addictive. Ac- cording to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, an average-size dip held in the mouth for 30 minutes equals the amount of nicotine ingested by smoking three cigarettes.
Smokeless tobacco also contains carcin- ogens. The World Health Organization In- ternational Agency for Research on Cancer has found at least 28 chemicals in smokeless tobacco that are known to cause cancer.
Users of smokeless tobacco are more at risk for cancer of the mouth, throat and esophagus, as well as pancreatic and stom- ach cancer. Dipping or chewing tobacco also damages the teeth and gums.
Nicotine-replacement therapy or medi- cations paired with counseling or a support group offer smokers a better solution for kicking the habit.
I have cold hands all year round. Is this the sign of a larger problem? Having cold hands even when you’re not in a cold environment is common. Often, having cold hands
is a part of your body’s natural response to regulate your body temperature and shouldn’t be cause for concern. But if you persistently have cold hands, particularly accompanied by color changes, it could be

a warning sign for a number of conditions. Persistently cold hands could mean you have a problem with the nerves or blood circulation or a problem with tissue damage in your hands or fingers. Signs and symptoms to watch for when you have cold hands include cold feet; changes to the color of the skin on your hands, such as blue or white skin; numbness or tingling; and tightened or hardened skin. These could be warning signs of Raynaud’s disease, anemia, frostbite, lupus, scleroderma, Buerger’s disease, thyroid disease, diabetes or high
blood pressure.
If you are concerned, make an
appointment with your doctor and get a medical checkup.
Why do men lose weight faster than women?
There is a big difference in the way that females and males lose weight. It is important to understand that the
way a man should be eating for weight loss is completely different from the way a woman should be eating for weight loss.
Men have high levels of the hormone testosterone that benefit them in losing weight, and they have more muscle mass from the testosterone levels. Therefore, they burn more calories at rest than most females. Women have some testosterone but have much more estrogen. The hor- mone estrogen makes it harder for women to lose excess weight from their hips, but- tocks and thighs.
If you want to even up the odds, work on weight training to raise your metabo- lism. Women tend to shy away from weights for fear that they will bulk up, but this is unlikely unless they are engaged in very intensive training with heavy weights.
