Prevention advises pregnant women and women who want to become pregnant to avoid traveling to countries where the virus is active. Those who do travel to the affected areas should take precautions against mosquito bites. All travelers returning from the affected countries should continue those precautions against mosquitoes at home to avoid spreading the disease. Men who reside in or have traveled to an area of active zika- virus transmission who have a pregnant partner should either abstain from sexual activity or consistently and correctly use condoms during the pregnancy.
Can strep throat cause hives?
Hives, also known as urticaria, are raised, itchy bumps that can suddenly appear anywhere on the
body, then can disappear and reappear in a new location. The bumps can be reddish or skin-colored. When pressed, the center of the hive turns white, a reaction that is called blanching.
Hives can be as small as a pencil eraser or can cover the entire stomach or back.
Strep throat or other bacterial infections can cause hives, as can viral infections such as the common cold or infectious mononucle- osis. Other triggers include certain foods and medications — including antibiotics, aspirin and ibuprofen — insect bites, latex, pet dan- der and pollen. For some people, hives can even be caused from physical stimuli such as pressure, heat, cold, exercise and sunlight.
The best treatment for hives is avoiding whatever triggered them, which can be diffi- cult when the cause is unknown. Maintaining a log of what one eats and comes in contact with could help in identifying the trigger.
Antihistamines or a cold compress on the hives can help provide relief from the itching.

According to the National Institute on Aging, Alzheimer’s disease is an irreversible brain disorder in which
the memory and thinking skills slowly dete- riorate. An estimated 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, making it the most common form of dementia among the elderly. Symptoms typically appear in the mid-60s or later.
Researchers believe a number of factors, including genetics, play a role in developing the disease. In most cases, having an imme- diate relative with Alzheimer’s does slightly increase your chance of developing the dis- ease; however, it does not make it a foregone conclusion. The risk increases if more than one family member has the illness.
A small percentage of patients have a form of the disease that can begin as early as 30. If a parent has early-onset familial Alzheimer’s disease (FAD), there is a 50 percent chance of the next generation inheriting the disease.
What is the zika virus?
The zika virus is a mosquito-borne disease that can cause a mild fever, skin rash, joint aches and conjunc-
tivitis (pink eye). Most people with the virus never experience any symptoms. While the zika virus is usually mild, there is concern that it could cause birth defects, specifically microcephaly (small head), in fetuses whose mothers were infected with the virus while pregnant.
The zika virus was first noted in 1947 in Africa; then last year, the disease appeared in Brazil, other countries in South and Central America, and the Caribbean.
Currently, most United States cases are of people who were infected while traveling to those affected regions.
