THE VISION OF ONE MAN BRINGS COMMUNITY, COUNTRY TOGETHER

It was the idea of a man with a purpose to make a lasting difference that spawned what is now an annual event. Carl Garner, who at the time was serving as a resident engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, saw a collection of litter and trash that had accumulated
over a period of years and a dire need to clean it up.
“The most amazing thing to me was how this man brought this community together,” said Gale McRae, executive director of the Greers Ferry Lake/Little Red River Association.“I’ve heard so many different stories about how the cleanup started.”
One piece of lore is that Garner, who died in 2014, began his efforts by continuing an area cleanup started by the Boys Scouts. This year will be the 46th consecutive cleanup, which has drawn not only members of the local community, but also volunteers from surrounding states.
