Information, expert advice and entertainment available at all-day event
For the third consecutive year, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Senior Expo, sponsored by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sci- ences, will provide opportunities for seniors
to learn and have fun. The all-day health and life- style expo is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock.
The event is free to the public and features area ven- dors, educational seminars and entertainment present- ed especially for Arkansans 55 and older. This year’s emcee will be meteorologist Pat Walker with KARK.
The event will also feature speaker Jean Chatzky, NBC’s Today show financial editor, presented by AARP, and a political panel with Arkansas Democrat-Gazette columnist John Brummett; Skip Rutherford, dean of the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service; Sen. Jason Rapert, R-Conway; and Bill Vickery, host of 103.7 The Buzz’s The Sunday Buzz.
“This is our third year for this event in Little Rock, and we are so excited to be able to bring it to the com- munity — for free,” said Amanda Copley, marketing and events director at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. “We have a great lineup of businesses that will offer
products and services to attendees, and a full schedule of activities ranging from financial advice to doctor panels to politics.”
The event is open to those who are 55 and older, but families and caregivers are also welcome. More than 45 businesses will be on hand at the event, where they will provide information about a variety of topics pertaining to seniors and their families.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette began Senior Expo in 2013 as a way to bring together businesses, services, resources, health screenings and education for a one-day event that would cater to the senior demographic in the Little Rock metro.
The event has helped many local seniors find the answers they were looking for, Copley said.“We were very fortunate to be able to partner with UAMS again this year, who is able to bring health screenings and education to the event, which is a key focus for us,” she added. “We also have developed a great lineup of seminars and fun entertainment for our attend- ees. Our goal is to put everything seniors need for a healthy lifestyle in one convenient place.”
Senior health will be one of the main focuses of the event. Experts from UAMS will provide health
screenings with no appointment needed. In addition, “Ask the Doc” 15-minute private consultations will be scheduled on-site from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. UAMS will also offer nutrition, vision and weight-loss infor- mation tailored to seniors’ specific needs.
Visitors to the event will also have a chance to explore UAMS’ giant inflatable Mega Brain. The over- sized model allows seniors to learn about the brain’s structure and strokes, as well as other brain injuries and diseases.
In addition, attendees can meet John Deering, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette editorial cartoonist, who will be promoting his book The View From Here. The book is a collection of Deering’s editorial cartoons from his past 30 years with the newspaper, along with a col- lection of his nationally syndicated comic strip “Strange Brew”. The View From Here will be available for pur- chase at the Senior Expo, and Deering will sign copies.
Signed copies of Janet Carson’s In the Garden will be available for purchase, and those interested in tak- ing a look at available books can take advantage of a
