UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS FOR MEDICAL SCIENCES COLLEGE OF NURSING
Take your nursing career to the next level
The College of Nursing at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences strives to improve health care for all Arkansans by providing students with an education that sets them apart in the nursing field.
The college is the largest nursing program in the state and offers students the unique opportunity to learn from a dedicated faculty and collaborate with community organizations. In addition to classes held at the Little Rock campus, classes are held online and at UAMS regional centers around the state to allow students from rural areas to take classes close to home. Students can also complete practicums with practicing nurses in areas close to home.
As part of the state’s only academic health-sciences center, the college prepares students for careers in prac- tice, teaching, administration and research through a variety of programs:
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree provides students with a strong foundation for professional and academic opportunities. Students learn in state-of-the-art laboratories to promote critical thinking and expertise in the clinical setting, and are exposed to interprofessional education opportunities with other colleges on campus to learn how a health care team interacts to provide excellent
patient care. The B.S.N. program offers an entry point for registered nurses. The R.N.-B.S.N. program is available online, has five start times throughout the year and offers completion within 12 to 18 months.
The Master of Nursing Science degree educates and prepares practitioners with a focus on family care, psy- chiatric mental health, pediatrics (acute and primary care), gerontology (acute and primary care) and nursing administration. The college educates the largest number of nurse practitioners in Arkansas. Graduates are prepared to provide care, collaborate in research and serve in health care leadership roles.
The Doctor of Nursing Practice degree is the highest level of nursing education for advanced-practice nurses and prepares graduates to translate research into practice, improve health care outcomes for patients and popula- tions, and advocate for change to improve health care. Beginning this fall, the program will offer a degree path- way for post-B.S.N. students in addition to its post-master’s pathway. The post-B.S.N pathway helps the state meet the growing demand for health care providers, offering specialties in family care, pediatrics, adult-gerontology and psychiatric mental health.
The UAMS College of Nursing is the only in the state to offer a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing program, which prepares graduates for nurse scientist and faculty roles. Graduates assume leadership positions in academic and health care settings, conduct research and influence nurs- ing practice and health care delivery. The program is known for its small classes and individualized attention.
