  A word to teachers

  Teaching guides

  Resources

As you prepare for the upcoming school year, we hope you will remember the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's Newspapers in Education program.
NIE is a segment of the newspaper that provides free support services to teachers, including in-service training, resource materials and classroom presentations.
    NIE programs:

Help students become informed and involved citizens who can determine and guide their own destinies in a democratic society.
Help students develop critical reading skills by teaching newspaper reading.
Provide educators with an economical, effective and exciting teaching resource for lessons in writing, history, math, current events, consumer affairs, ecology and scores of other subjects.
Convey an understanding of the free press as an essential institution in a free society.
Foster students' personal growth through use of the newspaper to provide information, entertainment and skills necessary for modern life.

The newspaper is a flexible teaching tool that can be used in all areas of the curriculum and at all ages and ability levels. Arkansas teachers have used the NIE program to teach math, science, reading, writing, social studies and health and safety.
